Has Life Changed Since Your Last Insurance Review?

Spring has a way of making us notice what needs a little attention.

We clean out cupboards, tackle jobs around the house and start thinking about the year ahead. It’s also a good time to look at the bigger picture - particularly when it comes to the things that help protect your family and your financial future.

Over the past 12 months, many New Zealand families have experienced changes to their income, mortgage, household expenses and future plans.

Life rarely stays exactly the same, so it’s worth asking whether your financial protection has kept pace.

When Was the Last Time You Reviewed Your Insurance?

For many people, the answer is “I can't remember.”

Insurance is often something we put in place when a particular need arises - buying a home, starting a family, changing jobs or taking on new financial commitments. Once it's sorted, it can be easy to put it to the back of your mind and assume everything is still doing what it should.

But your circumstances may have changed significantly since you first arranged your cover.

You may have a different income, different financial commitments or different people depending on you. Your priorities may have changed too.

A policy that was right for you a few years ago may not necessarily still reflect the life you're living today.

What Might Have Changed?

Spring can be a useful reminder to take stock of the changes that have happened over the past year.

It might be worth considering a review if you've:

  • Started a new job or received a pay rise - changes to your income can affect the level of protection you may need.

  • Welcomed a new family member - having children can change both your financial responsibilities and what you want to protect.

  • Changed your mortgage - perhaps you've increased your lending, paid down a significant amount or refinanced.

  • Had changes in your relationship or family circumstances - marriage, separation or other changes can affect your financial plans and responsibilities.

  • Made changes to your business - growing your business, changing your role or taking on new responsibilities can all affect your financial position.

  • Changed your future plans - your goals may look quite different from when your insurance was originally arranged.

You don't need to have experienced a major life event either. Sometimes a review is simply useful because time has passed.

Why Regular Reviews Matter

A review isn't necessarily about buying more insurance.

It's about making sure what you have still makes sense.

Your adviser can look at your current circumstances, including your income, debts, family responsibilities and future goals, and help you understand whether your existing protection still aligns with them.

Sometimes that may identify an opportunity to improve your protection. In other cases, you may find that your existing arrangements are still appropriate.

The value of a review isn't always in changing something. Sometimes it's in knowing that you're already on the right track.

It can also be an opportunity to revisit policies that have become complicated over time and make sure you understand what you have, why you have it and how it is intended to work.

Think of It as a Spring Clean for Your Financial Protection

We don't always need a reason to spring clean the house. Sometimes it's simply good to take a fresh look at what's there.

Your insurance can be treated in much the same way.

You don't have to wait until something goes wrong to discover that your circumstances have changed.

Taking a little time to review your protection while life is going well can provide reassurance and help you feel more prepared for whatever comes next.

And if it's been a while since you last looked at your insurance, spring could be the perfect time to start.

Ready for a Fresh Look?

If you're not sure whether your insurance still reflects your current circumstances, we're happy to have a conversation.

There’s no need to have all the answers before you get in touch. A review is simply an opportunity to look at where you are today and make sure your financial protection continues to support where you're heading.
