A Year-End Financial Checklist for Peace of Mind

As the year wraps up (can you believe it!?!), most of us are busy planning for the holidays, family, and planning for the new year. But it’s also the perfect time to give your finances a quick check-up. A little time spent now can help you start the new year feeling organised, protected, and on track.

Here’s a simple year-end financial checklist to help give you peace of mind - without the stress.

💰 1. Review Your Budget and Spending

Take a look at how your finances have tracked over the year. Where did your money go? Are there areas where you can save, reduce subscriptions, or reallocate funds?

This isn’t about being perfect - it’s about being aware. A quick review can help you spot patterns and make smarter choices for the year ahead.

🏦 2. Check In on Your KiwiSaver

Your KiwiSaver account plays a big role in your future financial security. Check:

  • Is your fund type still right for your goals?

  • Have you made the most of employer and government contributions?

  • Could changing your contribution rate make a difference?

A quick review now can help your money work harder for you.

🧾 3. Review Your Insurance Cover

Life changes fast — your insurance should keep up. If you’ve bought a home, had a baby, changed jobs, or your health has changed, your cover may need updating.

Review your policies to make sure they still match your needs. It’s about protecting the people and things that matter most to you.

📝 4. Update Your Will and Estate Plan

While not the most exciting task, having an up-to-date Will and estate plan gives you and your loved ones peace of mind. Check that your Will reflects your current wishes and any changes in your life over the past year.

📊 5. Revisit Your Goals for the Year Ahead

Financial planning isn’t just about protection - it’s also about possibility. Whether you’re saving for a home, travel, retirement or building wealth, setting clear goals gives you something to work toward.

Start small: one or two focused financial goals can make a big impact.

🌿 6. Clear Out Financial Clutter

Just like spring cleaning your home, clearing out old financial paperwork, closing unused accounts, or reviewing subscriptions can give you a fresh start. Less clutter means more clarity.

One thing our house been looking at is comparing the paid TV subscriptions (such as Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and Neon) and comparing those to the free services (such as TVNZ and Three Now) to see if we can cut down on those monthly expenses and make the most of the free options. Yes, there are more ads but it is a throwback to the old TV ways!

💬 7. Talk to a Professional

Sometimes, a quick chat with someone who knows the ins and outs can make all the difference. A financial review isn’t about making big changes overnight — it’s about making sure you’re protected, on track, and confident about what’s ahead.

🌱 Start the New Year Strong

The end of the year is the perfect time to tidy up your finances, protect what matters, and set yourself up for success. Small steps today can mean less stress — and more peace of mind — tomorrow.
