Why do people put off Financial Planning?

We are living in the “information age” and yet one of the recurring reasons give for putting off financial planning is “I don’t know where to get the right information”.

Odd isn’t it?

An obvious answer is ME.  Your financial adviser...

Many clients have sought advice over the years for just a part of their financial affairs, such as their insurance plan, or some advice on particular investments, or whether to join KiwiSaver.  And they are all parts of a complete financial plan…and we can fill in the blanks for you.

But here are the other reasons we hear for putting off financial planning:

  • I am focused on the here and now, and don’t have time to plan ahead.

  • I want quick results.

  • I don’t actually know what “financial planning” is, and felt silly asking.

  • I can’t afford it.

  • I don’t trust the financial institutions/investment managers.

All of these reasons have some validity, some of the time, for some people.  But all of these reasons are non-reasons…all of them can be dealt with far more easily than most people think.

Financial planning is about understanding your priorities, which includes time, money, your vision of the life you want to have, as well as what you have to work with today.  Financial planning is about balancing all of those things to find the right strategy that delivers the outcomes you are looking for.  Naturally that involves understanding who you do or don’t trust, whether you are looking for short term gains or long term ones, and so on.

It is a paradox isn’t it?  The process of financial planning is about fixing the things that concern you about financial planning.

Ultimately though, a financial plan is a very personal thing.  It is your plan for you to create the life you want for yourself.

Financial planning really IS all about you.
