The Simple Things in Life are Free

The other day my 5yr old son said “Dad, can you buy me a kite?”

Fair enough request on a picture perfect Auckland day with no wind and nothing to do.  Then I had a thought…. Hey, Let’s actually make a kite!  It will fill in more time and we can use the resources around us.  That stupid bamboo bush might as well come in for something useful.   The bonus was  he seemed very happy with the idea of chopping something down and using his hands to make his kite.  It wasn’t long before we had a kite made from the bamboo, a rubbish bag, string and cellotape.

As a family we hopped in the people mover and headed to Army Bay, tramped out to the edge of the Whangaparaoa Peninsular (the only place I thought there might be wind) and had a ball.

We all live hectic lives, either running businesses, managing staff, kids and alike or being managed by others and their agenda.  Either way… we’re living the dream albeit in the fast lane.  Taking time out, playing with the kids and having fun is priceless.  It’s these days that will be treasured by our children, not the long hours we  work to provide for our families.  Both are important, and both need to be balanced.
